KC LEGAL (Kansas City Lesbian and Gay Allied Lawyers) denounces President Trump’s Executive Order banning the immigration of Muslims from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia because the order places the United States in violation of international treaty law which the US legislature has agreed to respect.
The United States acceded to the United Nations Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees in 1968. By act of Congress in 1980, the US incorporated the Protocol definition of “refugee” into US law in 1980, bringing the US in alignment with the other 144 nations of the earth that define a refugee as a person fleeing persecution on account of his or her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. In doing so, the United States committed itself to offering sanctuary to victims whose home countries are unable or unwilling to help them.
Historically, in the US and in countries around the world, individuals who suffer persecution on account of their LGBT status have qualified for refugee status as members of a particular social group. Twelve countries today punish homosexuality by death. This judicially sanctioned murder exists as part of the penal codes of six of the seven countries regulated by Trump’s Executive Order, Syria being the lone exception. Until now, the United States has honorably provided life-saving refuge to LGBT individuals threatened by death in Yemen and Somalia. Whether a person in Iraq or Iran or the Sudan is an atheist, a Christian, or a Muslim, if he or she faces death because of his or her innate sexuality, the United States has defended the right to life and freedom and offered itself as a sanctuary.
The Executive Order in question, however, creates a standard of disparate treatment for Christian and Muslim gays who flee persecution, cementing a two-tiered system for the classification of refugees. In effect the Executive Order defines two standards for offering life-saving assistance to human beings who define themselves as gay: Christians are worth saving and Muslims are not.
This Order is an affront to human dignity. KC LEGAL stands for the rule of law and our country’s founding principle, that all are created equal.
Modern Family Alliance (MFA), previously known as Midwest Alternative Family Alliance (MAFA), is
sponsoring a conference entitled The Life Cycle of the Modern (LGBT) Family on Saturday, November
5, 2016, at the Kauffman Foundation (4801 Rockhill Road, KC, MO).
Eric Rosswood, author of Journey to Same-Sex Parenthood – Firsthand Advice, Tips and Stories from
Lesbian and Gay Couples, is the Keynote Speaker. Additionally, there will be twelve smaller break-out
sessions covering such topics as how to build your family (infant adoption, foster to adopt, surrogacy,
insemination by donor, etc.); special issues with teachers, bullying and schools; transracial and
transcultural issues; transgender issues; parenting and discipline issues; maintenance of the couple
relationship; estate planning; wellness and others.
Also present at the conference will be other non-profit LGBT groups that support families, so they can
make themselves more available to attendees for information.
MFA is a non-profit group that supports LGBT families and their children in the greater Kansas City area.
Established in 2005, MFA has sponsored picnics, play dates and dinners for adults, as well as numerous
educational conferences to connect and support their members and the community.

The annual program is composed of three components: (1) a CLE luncheon series; (2) training “prep” sessions; and (3) performance sessions. The CLE luncheons are held monthly at the Charles E. Whittaker Courthouse and focus on practical skills such as depositions, pre-trial motion practice, jury instructions and ethics. United States Magistrate Judge Robert E. Larsen leads the prep sessions and covers the six major components of a trial: Voir dire, opening statements, evidentiary foundations, direct and cross-examination , expert witnesses (using actual FBI agent witnesses), and closing arguments.

The Sixteenth Circuit Judicial Commission announces that it is extending the time period during which it will accept applications for the position of Circuit Judge, Division 19 of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit (Jackson County). This position will be created by the upcoming retirement of Judge Kathleen A. Forsyth.
The Commission will accept and consider completed applications received by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Applicants are encouraged to submit their completed applications prior to that time if possible.
Citizens are encouraged to nominate well-qualified candidates for the Commission’s consideration. The Missouri Constitution, Article V, Section 21, requires that a Circuit Judge be at least thirty years old, licensed to practice law in Missouri, a qualified voter of Missouri, and a resident of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.
