Tax and probate laws did not have non-traditional families in mind when they were enacted. The probate codes wholly disregard a significant other, while property sharing may invoke tax problems. We will review problems for non-traditional families under the probate and tax laws, and discuss effective estate planning techniques to address these issues.

Conflicts have arisen to the point where the level is determined more by the state or circuit than a solid legal analysis. This session will lay out the arguments for placing LGBT Americans squarely into strict scrutiny.

KC LEGAL and HRC sponsored a special Third Thursday to screen "Overruled!" -- a short documentary produced by Lambda Legal.

In 1998, police stormed into John Lawrence's Houston home and arrested him and Tyron Garner for violating Texas' "homosexual conduct" law. "Overruled!" highlights their story and the courtroom drama behind Lawrence v. Texas – the case that led the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down all remaining state sodomy laws and launched a new era in the LGBT rights movement. The 15-minute documentary was produced by Lambda Legal, and highlights the efforts of the lawyers and organizations behind the scenes. The case also illustrates the importance of electing officials who will appoint fair-minded judges to our nation's judiciary this November.
