On January 30, 2008, Finney County Attorney John Wheeler Jr. was invited to Garden City Community College to provide education regarding sexual offenses and their prevention. Over 100 students attended the presentation. During his explanation of Kansas sodomy laws, Mr. Wheeler unequivocally stated: "Homosexuality is a crime in Kansas."

Until this week, the only association in Kansas City dedicated to gay and lesbian lawyers was Lana Knedlik's occasional lunch group. KC LEGAL, a bar association for, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender attorneys in Kansas City, kicked off its first meeting Wednesday evening at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law's student lounge. Amid the finger foods and beverages, about 50 people, both gay and straight, started an effort to get a "seat at the table" with other specialty bar groups, said Knedlik, the organization's president.
